ESPN Bet’s launch in New York faces another delay

The New York State Gaming Commission delays ESPN Bet’s launch in New York, which was expected to be in late September.

PENN Entertainment acquired WynnBet Sportsbook and replaced it with ESPN Bet for $25 million. Initially, it was expected to have ESPN Bet live in New York in August. According to the company’s Executive Vice President, Mark Walker, they were “ready to go” and were just waiting for the official approval from New York. However, the launch then was delayed to later this month.

Now it is known that the New York State Gaming Commission hasn’t reviewed PENN Entertainment’s request to buy Wynn Interactive Holdings just yet. The company only scheduled a meeting for September 23, 2024 which means that ESPN BET will not be launched in New York until late September.

PENN Entertainment was hoping to see ESPN’s launch before the NFL season’s peak, and now the company is frustrated with the delay. PENN’s second quarter presentation highlighted the importance of their debut in New York, which would expand their market to nearly half of the US population.

Although ESPN BET operates in 18 states, it struggles against giants like DraftKings and FanDuel, and New York’s launch could significantly boost the company’s reach.
