Football Australia bans players linked to match-fixing
Football Australia has imposed multi-year bans on four professional players after investigations revealed match-fixing breaches.
Clayton Lewis and Kearyn Baccus have been banned from all football-related activity for five years, with the sanctions taking effect from May 17, 2024. The investigation found that the players violated integrity regulations linked to match manipulation. Each player received $10,000 to get themselves booked during Macarthur FC’s game against Sydney FC in December 2023.
The disciplinary panel offered a 12-month conditional reduction from the suspension. Both players had to complete 200 hours of unpaid community service in connection with integrity and education programs to qualify for the reduction. Both Lewis and Baccus chose to accept the offer, marking the sanctions as final.
Additionally, the investigation led to two more players being banned. Riku Danzaki and Yuta Hirayama received seven-year bans, which began on June 1, 2025. Danzaki received $16,000 from bets placed by Hirayama and also pleaded guilty to earning yellow cards on purpose during different A-League games.
The bans show the seriousness of the violations, and they also prohibit any involvement in professional or organized football during the suspension period. Both players accepted the decision and chose not to appeal. This concluded the investigation, and the case was formally closed.
