Germany to apply major iGaming updates by 2026
Germany could soon fix key problems in its iGaming laws, including confusing deposit limits, stake restrictions, and IP blocking rules.
Experts from the DOCV (Germany’s Online Casino Association) and legal firm Melchers say these changes are needed to make the market fairer and more competitive against black market operators.
Currently, players in Germany can only bet up to €1 per spin on online slots and deposit a maximum of €1,000 per month across all regulated sites. These rules are tracked by a national system called LUGAS. However, critics say the limits are unclear and hurt legal operators.
The regulator, GGL, has been reviewing these laws since late 2023. It’s now working with a special group to better define what “affordability” means. Something that has never been clearly explained in the current rules.
Lawyer Michelle Hembury expects the updated treaty to include a clear definition of affordability and possibly allow operators to apply for higher deposit and stake limits.
Another issue is IP blocking, used to stop access to illegal gambling websites. A German court ruled last year that the current law doesn’t support this. Hembury believes the update will include legal support for IP blocking.
