Google bans prediction market ads in Michigan and New York
Effective from July 13, 2026, Google announced that it has banned the advertisement of prediction market platforms in Michigan and New York.
The extension of the ban was announced through an update in the search engine’s Prediction Markets Policy, coming just a month after Google imposed a prediction market ads ban in Ohio on June 2, 2026. Additionally, the prohibition will apply to any related product ads as well.
Google shared in the announcement:
“In July 2026, Google will update our Prediction markets policy in the United States to prohibit the advertisement of prediction markets contracts and related products ads in Michigan and New York. Consequently, advertising of prediction markets and related products in Michigan and New York is prohibited effective July 13, 2026.”
Although Google did not provide a clear reasoning behind the decision to ban prediction market ads in the 2 states and hasn’t revealed whether the state restrictions are connected to legal proceedings, the timeline has aligned with Michigan and New York receiving court rulings against prediction platforms.
The technology company’s policies clearly state that only CFTC-regulated prediction markets can promote their products in approved U.S. states, with the advertisers required to hold Designated Contract Market (DCM) or National Futures Association (NFA) registrations.
