India’s 8th largest state eyes legal betting and gaming

Karnataka, India’s eighth-largest state, is seriously considering legalizing and regulating both online and land-based betting and gaming.
On April 9, Karnataka’s Home Minister, G Parameshwara, shared that a new law is in the works. He and the state’s IT minister recently met with key figures from the betting and gaming industry to discuss a regulated framework.
Gangadharaiah Parameshwara, the state’s home minister, said:
“I chaired a meeting regarding online betting and gambling yesterday along with the IT Minister. Representatives from the industry were called. There is nothing to regulate them so far. They have agreed to the introduction of a license system and regulation as per law. Once the draft is submitted, we will bring in a new law.”
To make this happen, the state has formed a special committee consisting of government officials and industry experts. They’ve been tasked with drafting legislation within a month, which will then go to the state legislature in Bengaluru for approval.
In India, gambling laws are mostly left to individual states. While federal law, like the Public Gambling Act of 1867, bans public gaming houses, it’s outdated and silent when it comes to iGaming. Karnataka’s move can completely change the gambling landscape in India.
