Japan reports the biggest iGaming arrest over $194M bet

A Tokyo man is facing serious prison time after illegally using $194 million in online bets despite Japan’s strict ban on iGaming.

A 38-year-old Makoto Chomabayashi reportedly spent almost 90 million yen (about $625,000) on online casino games, mostly baccarat, through the international site Stake. But this wasn’t just a personal habit. According to authorities, Chomabayashi acted as a promoter for Stake, receiving a 2% cut of every bet placed by people he referred, which were more than 100.

He often shared good news of his winnings on X under the name “Meikyoshisui,” a poetic phrase meaning “clear mirror, still water.” But behind the serene name, police found anything but fake. They suspect he actually wagered a total of 28 billion yen, which is $194 million, making this the largest individual illegal gambling case ever recorded in Japan.

Gambling in Japan

Gambling laws in Japan are super strict. While horse racing and lottery are allowed under government watch, iGaming is strictly prohibited unless it’s for specific public sports pools. However, the market still records growth in its charts, and Japan struggles with rising online gambling addiction.

To ensure complete compliance with country regulations, the gambling market keeps being strictly monitored. Recently, lawmakers took action and opposed a bill that may completely erase online casinos in Japan.
