KSA Warns BetMGM For Using an Underage Role Model in Gambling Ads

The Dutch Gambling Regulator, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), disapproves of 17-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal’s appearance in one of BetMGM‘s ads.

Dutch gambling laws clearly state that gambling operators aren’t allowed to use role models in their advertising campaigns, and they must not appeal to vulnerable groups, including minors.

BetMGM launched in the Netherlands just over a year ago and was well aware of the rules. The advertisement was live for a short time and was quickly removed by the publisher. However, BetMGM failed to report the issue, despite being warned by an affiliated media company.

KSA reminded that licensed companies are obliged to report to KSA of errors, as those could pose a danger to consumers and vulnerable groups.

BetMGM was dealt with just a warning because it quickly ended the violation and took acceptable measures to prevent similar situations. Still, KSA stressed that providers have the responsibility to comply with the laws and regulations, and incidents must be immediately reported, even if there is an internal investigation underway.
