Massachusetts Fines Fanatics $15K for illegal Parlay Bet

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission imposed a $15,000 fine on Fanatics Betting and Gaming  for accepting a low-stakes parlay bet that involved a college basketball game within the state.

During Thursday’s meeting, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) revealed that Fanatics accepted a $2 parlay bet at the end of 2023. This bet included a game featuring a Massachusetts college basketball team, which violated state rules barring bets on local college teams outside of tournaments.

Zachary Mercer, MGC’s Enforcement Counsel, informed commissioners that the mistake was caught before the game began, leading to the cancellation of the problematic part of the parlay. Caitlin Monahan, Director of the MGC’s Investigations and Enforcement Bureau (IEB), explained that in such cases, the bet proceeds with adjusted odds reflecting the removed leg.

Interestingly, the parlay bet in question ended up losing.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s Investigations and Enforcement Bureau (IEB) alerted the Commission about the error on February 1, 2024. Following their investigation, the IEB recommended a $15,000 fine. Zachary Mercer noted that  Fanatics was “responsive and communicative.”

In a unanimous decision, the commissioners approved the imposed sanction.

Massachusetts has fined Fanatics again, marking the second penalty within two months from the MGC.

Earlier, Fanatics was fined $10,000 for accepting a $50 futures bet on an in-state college football game, the Fenway Bowl featuring Boston College and Southern Methodist University, in December of last year. Fanatics attributed the error to a new employee mistakenly enabling wagering on the college game. They promptly identified and self-reported the bet, refunding it the day after it was placed, well ahead of the game’s scheduled date.
