More opposition against Wynn NY casino project

The Wynn New York casino project, which will be built at Hudson Yards on Manhattan’s West, received opposition from Manhattan residents and community organizations.
On September 24, amNewYork reported the opposition noting the potential negative effects that will come together with the Wynn Resort’s project. The project will include not only a casino but also skyscrapers of 1,500 apartments, 2 million square feet of office space, and 750-seat public school and daycare rent.
Wynn Resorts announced its expansion plan in New York earlier this year, in May.
Sara Lind, co-executive director of Open Plans, who promotes High Line, said:
“They are proposing adding a large number of additional parking spaces into a Manhattan neighborhood near transit where we are looking for tourists and residents alike to be able to enjoy the public space that the High Line offers. Adding parking will encourage people to drive to the area, increasing bad congestion that is already there.”
Spokesperson for Related Companies responded:
“We cannot let debates over parking spots stand in the way of a massive public park, tens of thousands of jobs and careers, safer streets, affordable housing, and better transportation for New York City.”
The company also highlighted the important benefits that will come with the project.
Paul Steely White, executive director of Parks & Trails New York, said:
“With park visitation in New York at an all-time high, it is especially important that we expand and improve parks and open space. The proposed rezoning of the Western Rail Yards would do just the opposite. Constructing a building over a portion of the High Line, reducing usable public space, and taking away park access from the public for an undetermined amount of time are not sound development policies.”
Back in July, Assemblymembers Tony Simone and Deborah Glick joined the chorus of those speaking out against the Wynn proposal. They argued that the casino would disrupt the beautiful views that make the High Line such a beloved part of the city.
Earlier this month, a former NYC council speaker announced her support for the Wynn casino project.
