Nevada regulator files complaint against Polymarket
On January 16, 2026, the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) announced it would file a civil enforcement action against Blockratize, which is the owner of prediction markets provider Polymarket.
Filed in the District Court for Carson City, the complaint seeks an injunction from the court to stop Polymarket from offering unlicensed betting that violates Nevada law.
Since Polymarket’s return to the U.S. in July 2025, this case will be the first time that a court rules on the operator’s legality.
The NGCB stated:
“Nevada’s public policy, as expressed by the Legislature, is that the gaming industry is vitally important to the economy of the state and the general welfare of the inhabitants and therefore must be licensed, controlled, and assisted. Offering sports event contracts or certain other event contracts constitutes wagering activity under NRS 463.0193 and 463.01962, and, therefore, entities offering such event contracts must be licensed.”
Polymarket’s argument to defend the legality of its sports event contracts is unknown, as the operator hasn’t gone to court yet. On the other hand, when Kalshi was sued in a similar case in Massachusetts, the company argued that state gambling laws do not apply to federally regulated products.
