New Jersey gambling regulators fined two sportsbooks and a technology firm $40,000 for violations, including bets placed on unauthorized events and concluded games between 2020 and 2022.
DraftKings was fined $20,000 as a result of accepting unauthorized bets on Russian basketball and table tennis matches, together with preseason NFL player bets, all resulting from misidentifications by Kambi. After the regulatory investigation, DraftKings canceled $61,000 in wagers and refunded players.
Unlike DraftKings, Rush Street Interactive NJ and Kambi each faced $10,000 fines for accepting bets on a November 2021 college basketball game after it had ended, citing a connectivity error from Kambi, its sports betting technology provider. Kambi admitted the issue came from a failure to remove the game from betting markets due to a network error. The company retrained its traders to prevent similar violations in the future.
Further violations included Rush Street accepting bets on Magic City Jai Alai games and a Professional Golf Association match after results were known or events had begun. Errors were attributed to system failures and human mistakes by newly hired traders.
None of the companies came out with an immediate comment or statement. The violations highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining compliance within New Jersey’s tightly regulated gambling market. Recently, New Jersey shared its November revenues, naming it the strongest November for a decade.
