New York keeps facing casino license delays

The New York State Gaming Commission keeps slowing the process of issuing casino licenses with a new deadline of June 2025.

Efforts to fasten the approval of new casino licenses in New York have faced major delays. Despite the New York State Legislature’s 2022 decision with a green light for up to three new casino licenses to boost the local economy, the New York Gaming Commission keeps slowing the process, indicating that no announcement will be published on this matter until December 2025.

Senator Joseph Addabbo, frustrated by the delays, supported the bill to speed up the process. However, Governor Kathy Hochul has not supported this bill and decided that much longer time is needed to make up the decision and turned to the Gaming Facility Location Board’s purposal of extending the deadline to June 2025.

Despite these challenges, Addabbo and Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, who suggested the bill, remain hopeful, noting the economic benefits of a quicker process, such as $1.5 billion in license fees.

Projects waiting for New York’s official approval

Many casino projects are waiting for official approval from New York’s side in order to launch there. Earlier this month, a former NYC council speaker supported the casino projects, including those from Penn Entertainment and Wynn Resorts.

Wynn Resorts announced its expansion plan to New York earlier this year. And Penn Entertainment is waiting for approval for its latest addition, ESPN Bet’s launch, which has been delayed since August 2024.
