Philippines President Marcos skips online gambling in SONA
Philippines President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr delivered his annual State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, skipping to mention the future of online gambling.
In his speech, President Marcos delivered statements on agriculture, education, utility reform, and corruption-riddled flood-control infrastructure. However, despite the growing pressure from lawmakers, regulators, and the public, he failed to mention whether his administration plans to ban or regulate online gambling.
The industry has expanded rapidly in recent years, and was disappointed. Operators, licensed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), had hoped for clarity and a path forward. The critics were looking for a definitive stance against what they call a “growing epidemic.”
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said in a press briefing days before the SONA:
“We are still looking into it because we have to consider all the ramifications of allowing that type of gaming to operate.”
He confirmed that President Marcos had not yet reached a final decision, which left the industry in a regulatory void.
Finance Secretary Ralph Recto explained that the total ban of gambling is impossible, as it would worsen the country’s growing budget deficit, which is projected to reach ₱1.6 trillion in 2025. He pushes for stricter regulations and higher taxes.
On July 14, 14 PAGCOR-licensed online gaming operators issued a joint statement against a proposed nationwide ban. The group warned that prohibition would only drive customers toward illegal and unregulated platforms, and called instead for tighter controls and enforcement.
