Polymarket banned for two weeks in Nevada

On January 29, 2026, a Nevada court ordered Polymarket to stop offering event contracts in the state for at least two weeks.

Judge Jason D. Woodbury ordered a temporary restraining order against the prediction market platform, with the decision to be reviewed 14 days later. Woodbury agreed with the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB), stating that the Commodity Exchange Act doesn’t give exclusive authority over Polymarket’s contracts to the CFTC.

The Court argued that unlicensed market participants like Polymarket block the regulator from fulfilling its statutory responsibilities, such as preventing bets from players who could influence sporting event outcomes, protecting underage players, and keeping unsuitable individuals away from gambling activities.

Judge Woodbury said:

“The balance of hardships and public interest in maintaining meaningful control over Nevada’s gaming industry for the purpose of ensuring its integrity strongly supports issuance of the temporary restraining order.”

The Nevada regulator filed a civil enforcement action against Polymarket in the District Court for Carson City, aiming to stop the platform from offering unlicensed betting in the state. The NGCB stressed that sports event contracts are classified as a betting activity under Nevada law, which requires a license.

Polymarket had just recently relaunched operations in the U.S. after exiting the market as a result of a CFTC settlement.
