South Korea reports shocking rise in underage gambling
South Korea’s National Police Agency is alarming the significant rise in illegal online gambling operations among younger age groups, especially those under 19 years old.
From September 2023 to October 2024, almost 10,000 people were arrested in South Korea. Almost half of them, 47.2%, were 19 years old. Teens between the age groups of 15- 17 take first place in demographics. Moreover, even a 9-year-old was found involved in the illegal gambling activities. Most of the arrested teens, 99% were casual gamblers, yet a handful were actively involved in running gambling sites or creating ads.
Gaming advertisements, both online and offline, played a major role in drawing these groups to illegal platforms. When questioned, 43% of the young participants said that curiosity was their main motive to gamble. Another 34% reported peer pressure as a driving factor.

In response to the crisis, South Korea’s National Police Agency officials have referred 1,733 minors to counseling services, aiming to provide support and prevent them from future participation. Recognizing the potential long-term impact on youth, the agency has committed to extending its crackdown for another year, showing the importance of protecting South Korean teens from the dangers and risks of online gambling.
