Spain eyes stricter ID requirements for gambling

The Government of Spain is planning to introduce stricter ID requirements, aiming to exclude minors from the gambling industry.

In a recent move, Spain’s Ministry of Health was working on a report that would highlight concerns about problem gambling and the participation of underage groups. However, the Socialist Parliamentary Group, a coalition government under PM Pedro Sánchez, decided to take stricter measures before the report was finalized.

The motivation for the new proposal is a study from 2022 that revealed that 21.5% of students aged 14 to 18 had gambled within the past year. This alarming statistic prompted the SPG to call for stricter identification systems in gambling machines and online platforms, aiming to create a safer environment that reduces the risk of addiction by making games less attractive and addictive.

The proposal was accepted by Spain’s Joint Commission for the Study of Addiction Problems, which works on addressing addiction issues across the country.

Now, the next step is majority support when the proposal enters the debate level in the Congress of Deputies, Spain’s lower legislative house. Once approved, the proposed regulation will move to the Senate for final approval.
