Thailand lifts poker ban and makes arrangements for its recognition as a sport

The Interior Ministry of Thailand has taken off the decades-old poker ban and set discussions to arrange its recognition as a sport.

This move by the Interior Minister and Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is a part of efforts to establish international poker tournaments and reevaluate the game’s legal status. The order will remove the poker restriction regulation set by the Interior Ministry in 1958.

The new regulation was issued under Section 17 of the Gambling Act BE 2478 (1935) and took effect on July 30, 2025.

Even though the directive formally lifts the poker ban, Phumtham stated that poker is not fully legalized yet. A regulatory structure is still required to govern its classification and ensure appropriate controls.

Phumtham said:

“There are still legal obstacles that must be reviewed. If poker is to be classified as a sport, we need strict oversight. What is appropriate should be allowed, and what isn’t must be clearly prohibited.”

He noted that a committee will be formed to review the necessary legal conditions and oversee regulatory compliance.

Phumtham further added:

“As a sport, poker should be allowed to thrive and be played competitively. However, to ensure propriety, it should be permitted under specific conditions and implemented swiftly.”

Phumtham also addressed the public concerns over gambling addiction and the perception of poker. He said that poker should be allowed under specific conditions, and the committee will handle enforcement.
