Thailand names four cities for casino entertainment complexes

Thailand’s government has named four locations—Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, and Phuket—as the initial cities for the proposed casino entertainment complexes.

First announced in September 2024, the Thai casino bill aimed to legalize casinos within large entertainment complexes. Each complex will feature luxury hotels, shopping malls, amusement parks, sports arenas, and more, with less than 10% of space allocated for casinos.

Nikom Boonwiset, vice-chairman of the special committee overseeing the project, shared that the entertainment complexes are part of a 500-billion-baht initiative, expected to draw 50 million visitors annually and create 40,000 jobs.

Several international investors have expressed interest in the project. However, protests and public backlash have led the Thai government to delay the casino bill’s debut, requiring more feedback. According to Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, there are many unresolved issues in the market, one of which is the $1.5M casino entry fee for locals, which was later removed.
