Brazil’s gambling advertising ban moves forward
The Senate Science and Technology Committee has moved toward banning gambling advertising with a bill that would amend Brazil’s Sports Betting Law.
The bill includes the prohibition of sports betting and online games advertising nationwide, as well as a ban on the promotion of election betting. The measures would apply to radio, TV, newspapers, magazines, social media, and sports events.
Senator Damares Alves stressed:
“By imposing clear limits on the commercial performance of bookmakers and preventing the exploitation of the electoral environment by this type of activity, the proposition offers a legislative response proportional to the seriousness of the problem diagnosed by the Federal Senate.”
However, according to the release, there is the potential that the bill could allow amendments for sponsorships of Olympic sports clubs.
In case of non-compliance, the bill would impose fines of up to $2 million and suspension or revocation of licenses. It will now move on to the Constitution, Justice, and Citizenship Committee for further consideration.
Brazil launched its regulated iGaming market in January 2025 with 14 initial licensed operators, which has now increased to over 80. The first full year of the regulated market generated $7 billion in gross gaming revenue.
