Google updates its Gambling and games policy in Germany

Starting from September 25, 2024, only gambling operators and brokers licensed by GGL will be able to apply for advertising license certification.

Despite being legal, when compared to other countries, the gambling rates in Germany are relatively high. GGL, or the German Gambling Authority, is constantly monitoring the gambling industry to ensure its compliance with German laws.

Google’s new update with GGL on gambling and games policy in Germany

American multinational corporation and technology company, Google LLC, focused on online advertising, search engine technology, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce, consumer electronics, and artificial intelligence, will not approve certification applications from those companies that are not licensed by the Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder, simply known as GGL.

This new policy was announced on August 26. It refers not only to casino operators but also to all companies that offer “offer gambling aggregation services, for example by linking to multiple offers from different operators on their landing page.” This means that affiliates promoting unlicensed sites will also be affected by the new policy.

Gambling ads are allowed if they follow the policies below and the advertiser has received the appropriate Google Ads certification. Gambling ads must target approved countries, have a landing page that displays responsible gambling information, and never target minors. Check local regulations for the areas you want to reach. In addition to these requirements, there may be additional restrictions based on countries. If a country is not listed, Google Ads does not currently support gambling advertising in that country.”

GGL plays a crucial role in managing and enforcing gambling laws and regulations.

The Authority has undertaken the following steps:

This update reflects Google’s commitment to supporting responsible gambling advertising and following local regulations and industry standards. The gambling and games policy page will be updated when the policy goes into effect on September 25, 2024.
