Indian government targets iGaming and sports betting surge

India records a significant rise in iGaming and sports betting, causing the government to take severe action.

Reports suggest that more than 140 million Indians are active online gamblers, and the numbers rise to 370 million during major sporting events like the IPL. Fantasy gaming is also on the rise, with 180 million consumers. The growth is because of widespread smartphone penetration, digital expansion, and massive promotion by celebrities and influencers.

Psychiatrist Achal Bhagat highlighted:

“Apps such as these can take over one’s identity. If someone uses betting apps repetitively and this pervades their day-to-day functioning, it is time to seek help.”

Government takes action

With India’s illegal betting market exceeding $100 billion annually, regulators are ramping up enforcement. Authorities are investigating over 700 offshore gaming firms for tax evasion, money laundering, and security threats. However, shutting them down remains challenging since they operate from countries with lax regulations.

Earlier, the Digital India Foundation highlighted the urgent need for stricter regulation of illegal gambling sites in India.

While India pushes for stricter regulations, experts remind the government of the importance of balancing scrutiny and responsible practices.
