Macau officially launches a new law against illegal gambling

After being approved on October 16, Macau officially launched the new “Law to Combat Crimes of Illegal Gambling” on October 29.
Macau, an autonomous region on the south coast of China where casino gaming is lawful, published the news of the official launch of the law in the Official Gazette.
This new law will target different illegal practices, including the “multiplier” betting method, unlicensed online gambling, and currency exchange. One of the main changes is the implementation of stricter penalties, with prison sentences now ranging from one to eight years for illegal gambling activities. In fact, the law bans the promotion of unlicensed online gambling, with the government stating it will not issue licenses for this activity.
From January 2024, Macau blocked 36,000 illegal gambling websites in its territory, and it is expected that the region will report the highest gambling disorder number.
This new law is also a big step forward in Macau’s efforts to tighten control over its gaming sector, which is a crucial part of the country’s economy and reputation.
