Mexico blocks Bet365 and Betano over money laundering

Mexican authorities have blocked Bet365 and Betano as part of the fight against illegal gambling, suspecting the companies of money laundering in both online and land-based segments.

Recently, thousands of people in Mexico reported that they could no longer access sites like Bet365 and Betano. Many submitted posts on social media, wondering if the platforms were facing technical issues.

However, the real reason for the access block was that the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), which is part of the Ministry of Finance, instructed internet providers to block access to 13 casinos and online platforms, including Bet365.mx and Betano.mx.

This is to stop unlicensed operators from handling financial transactions without proper control. Weak licensing can let companies avoid taxes, mishandle personal data, and even facilitate illegal financial activity like money laundering. The crackdown shows how fragile the market can be for both operators and affiliates promoting the best sports betting affiliate programs, with regulatory clarity and a verified licensing status being more important than ever.

Bet365 and Betano operate in Mexico through Ganador Azteca SAPI de CV and Operadora Ganador TV Azteca SAPI de CV, both linked to Grupo Salinas. After the block, Grupo Salinas denied any issue from their side, saying both companies follow the law. The group also criticized the government for using state institutions for political purposes.

Back in October 2025, Mexico was positioned to raise gambling taxes from 30 to 50% starting in 2026.
