Sweden to reduce gambling tax from 22% to 18%

Riksdagen, the Swedish parliament, will consider reducing the gambling tax after increasing it to 22% from 18%.
A motion from Moderate Party member Carl Nordblom, published on October 2, highlights the potential benefits of reducing Sweden’s gambling tax rate to attract operators into the licensed market. Moreover, players will start to filter the market before any action.
The motion stated:
“The majority of operators have warned that the degree of channeling, the level of gambling that takes place in the Swedish licensed gaming market is decreasing. The consequences of this will be that Swedish players turn to foreign gambling companies without a Swedish gambling license.”
This motion comes three months after increasing the tax from 18% to 22%. With this move, it was projected that the tax revenue would be raised by £20.4 million in 2024 and then by £40.9 million in the following years.
Sweden’s gambling market
Sweden is now looking for more ways to boost the number of players engaging with the legal market. Spelinspektionen, the Swedish Gambling Authority, is continuously monitoring the market. In September, Spelinspektionen set stricter regulations in the country. Recently, Spelinspektionen has also targeted the black market for combating illegal gambling in the country.
