Spelinspektionen targets the black market
The Swedish Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, announced its new plan of combating illegal gambling by targeting the black market.
Spelinspektionen is strengthening its efforts to protect players from the dangers of illegal gambling. To do this, the regulator is preparing a detailed study that will give a clearer picture of the black market and ways to fight against unlicensed operators. The study will also identify all those illegal operators and understand how they manage to avoid the country’s laws.
Moreover, Sweden’s lottery operator, Kombispel, has already faced criticism for motivating elderly people to buy tickets through aggressive marketing. At the same time, Sweden’s trade association for online gambling, BOS, encourages the government to allow private casinos if the country’s only land-based casino chain, Casino Cosmopol, decides to shut its remaining locations.
Earlier this month, Spelinspektionen also set stricter casino regulations.
The study, expected to be completed by January 2025, will also compare Sweden’s situation to other countries with regulated gambling markets and may suggest changes in legislation to further combat illegal gambling.
