Vietnam opens second casino with citizen access

Vietnam’s casino sector is expanding, with the Grand Ho Tram resort in Ba Ria-Vung Tau receiving approval to allow citizens to gamble under a 5-year pilot program, as the Corona Resort & Casino on Phu Quoc Island was the only one with such access previously.

The resort was initially operating only for foreigners, but the new developments will allow Vietnamese citizens aged 21 and over to have access to the casino. This will also add new competitive pressure in a market where only one casino was offered to the citizens.

The government is also reviewing other locations that might receive additional permissions, including the new integrated resort under development in Van Don, expected to open in 2032 with a $2 billion budget.

The new expansion shows that authorities see the economic value in allowing casinos to operate for tourists and locals, while operators will also be monitoring how the Ho Tram paves the way for further developments for casinos.
