ESPN Bet now live in New York
After a long run, ESPN Bet made its debut in New York on September 27, 2024.
Penn Entertainment, Inc., formerly known as Penn National Gaming, is an American entertainment company and operator of integrated entertainment, sports content, and casino gambling.
Having the strongest footprint in the US with its 43 properties in 20 states, under brands including Hollywood Casino, Ameristar, and Boomtown, PENN Entertainment’s latest addition, ESPN Bet, has been facing delays in getting a license to operate in New York since its launch through a partnership between Penn and ESPN in 2023.
At the beginning of September, ESPN Bet was expected to have its debut in New York in a few weeks. However, later, it faced another delay.
Later, on September 23, the New York State Gaming Commission voted to transfer Wynn Resorts’ digital sports betting license to Penn Entertainment, making the company’s debut close to Week 4 of the NFL season.
New York is considered a key market due to its size and influence, and PENN is here to replace WynnBet Sportsbook, which stopped its operations in July. WynnBet’s license was acquired by PENN for $25 million with the aim to change the game and take control of the industry from dominators by FanDuel and DraftKings, who have control of almost 80% of the revenue.
ESPN Bet has a strong potential to compete, especially among younger bettors, excluding the group under the age of 21. However, “general marketing” campaigns may not be completely banned and may be available for all age groups.
