ANJ fines iGaming operator €75K over data breaches

The National Gaming Authority of France, the ANJ, fined an online gambling operator €75,000 after the investigation found major legal breaches in the data storage rules from 2022 to 2024.

The operator did not properly archive or provide access to the required player and betting data, as required by law. Moreover, in one case, several million euros in bets were excluded from the operator’s data storage system, while in another case, more than 900,000 records were found to be incorrect or fake.

These gaps violated Articles 31 and 38 of the law from May 12, 2010, and Articles 29 and 30 of the related decree issued on May 19, 2010.

According to the ANJ, breaches like this damage the trust and transparency of the gambling industry. Under French regulations, it is mandatory to record and store all player and gaming data in real time, making it available to the ANJ. The reason is to support the authority to monitor the market and keep it legal and safe.

This fine is part of the ANJ’s push to tighten control of online gambling in France. Recently, the ANJ demanded a whistle-to-whistle gambling ad ban and named Pauline Hot as the new director general.

By 2026, the ANJ plans to reduce problem gambling across France.
