Denmark set to reform gambling advertising rules by 2027

Starting in 2026, Denmark is set to introduce major changes to gambling advertising under the country’s Marketing and Advertising Law, giving media outlets, advertising agencies, and sports organizations a year to adapt.

All those new reforms aim to protect consumers, especially young people, from aggressive gambling promotions. While Denmark will not adopt the strict advertising bans such as those in Spain or Italy, it will introduce several new rules.

The government released a statement:

“One of the most important measures against aggressive marketing is that an extended whistle-to-whistle ban on gambling advertising during sporting events will now be introduced. This will be effective from 10 minutes before the first whistle to 10 minutes after the final whistle.”

Other restrictions include banning people younger than 25 from appearing in ads, limiting gambling promotions near schools and youth centers, and removing ads from public transport.

Newly elected Tax Minister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen commented:

“I am very pleased that with a broad majority in the Danish Parliament, we are now taking a significant first step to protect children and young people in particular from gambling problems and an overly aggressive gambling market. We are doing this, among other things, with an expanded whistle-to-whistle ban, just as advertising and influencers have made it all too easy to be lured into addiction. We are now taking an important step to slow down this development.”

The government will also set up a committee to regulate “gamefluencers”, streamers who gamble in front of young audiences, and block access to online gambling sites in school networks.

A full implementation of changes will be introduced in January 2027. All non-compliant companies or individuals will receive sanctions from the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden.
