NBA free agent Malik Beasley is currently under investigation by the US District Attorney in connection with alleged gambling activity related to league games.

A person familiar with the situation confirmed the information to the Associated Press on Sunday. However, the person, who requested anonymity due to a lack of authorization to speak publicly, noted that no formal charges have been filed against Beasley at this time.

In a statement released Sunday, NBA spokesman Mike Bass shared that they are cooperating with the federal prosecutors’ investigation. ESPN was the first to report on the matter.

Steve Haney, Beasley’s attorney, told the AP:

“There have been no charges against Malik. It’s just an investigation at this point. We hope people reserve judgment until he’s charged — or if he’s charged. It’s not uncommon for there to be a federal investigation.”

Beasley’s probation comes 14 months after the NBA banned Toronto’s Jontay Porter, who was implicated in a prop bet scheme and later pleaded guilty to wire fraud. Another investigation was launched into Terry Rozier, now of the Miami Heat, following irregular betting patterns, though no charges or sanctions have followed in that case.

Beasley, who signed a one-year $6 million deal with the Detroit Pistons last season, was instrumental in the team’s turnaround. He broke the franchise’s single-season record with 319 made three-pointers and averaged 16.3 points per game, helping Detroit return to the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

The NBA and federal authorities have not disclosed further details at this time. Beasley remains eligible for team activities and has not been suspended.
