Police officers in Zimbabwe banned from entering betting shops

Zimbabwe police bans uniformed officers from entering betting shops for unofficial assignments, following photos showing police officers actively placing bets.
After the circulation of the photos, Zimbabwe’s police force and the public strongly criticized the act. National police Commissioner Paul Nyathi made a new declaration at the inaugural H-Metro National Forum On Responsible Betting in Harare on July 12.
Commissioner Paul Nyathi said at the conference:
“Police officers in uniform must not enter betting shops or casinos to gamble. This does not portray the police in a good light, and such behavior is strongly discouraged. Anyone caught doing so will face disciplinary action.”
The Zimbabwe police betting shop ban is part of a wider effort to ensure professionalism and that respect for law enforcement agencies is maintained.
The identities of the involved officers were not revealed, but images shared on social media showed two of them pressed over the counter in a betting shop.
The gambling sector has come forward to express its support for the ban and also emphasize its positive contributions to the economy. Operators claim that the industry is not just a source of entertainment but a significant driver of job creation and government revenue. They voiced their support for professionalism within the industry while defending its reputation.
