TikTok bans gambling advertisements in the Philippines

Starting August 22, 2025, the Philippine government will require TikTok to stop showing ads for real money gambling (RMG) in the country as a part of a wider campaign that aims to limit the spread of online gambling and enhance the protection of internet users, especially youngsters.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) confirmed the decision, calling it a “big step” in promoting online safety.

DICT Secretary Henry Aguda commented:

“It is significant for global platforms like TikTok to support the government’s digital safety efforts.”

iGaming in the Philippines

Different apps, social media, and shopping platforms have significantly affected the spread of iGaming practices in the Philippines. Earlier this month, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) directed banks and e-wallet providers to cut off gambling-related links. Moreover, a PlaySafe Alliance was formed to fight illegal iGaming.

However, Senator Gatchalian called for tougher laws, noting that gambling contributes to crime, family problems, and mental health issues. Now, while TikTok’s ban is an important achievement for the country, there are still gaps in the industry that must be filled to stop gambling operators’ misuse of digital platforms.
