Belgium to restrict gambling sponsorships starting in 2025
Belgium’s Gaming Commission (Kansspelcommissie) is set to introduce new regulations regarding gambling sports sponsorships, which will take effect in January 2025.
With the debut of the new regulation, sports clubs will no longer be permitted to accept sponsorship deals with those companies that suggest games of chance. However, associations using logos or brand names of gaming operators will still be allowed by the Gambling Act of 1999. This refers to foundations, supporter networks, websites, and online broadcast channels.
The new regulation will also restrict logo placements on sportswear. Logos must no longer appear on the front of jerseys and must not exceed 75 cm² in size. These changes are part of Belgium’s strategy of player protection initiative, approved by the Chamber of Representatives and backed by Green Party Minister Stefaan Van Hecke.
Football dominates Belgium’s sports betting sector
According to the data from Kansspelcommissie, football keeps dominating sports betting, with a significant increase in player accounts during the Euros 2024. Total online wagers during Euro 2024 reached €8.6 million, with the Belgian national team’s match against Slovakia generating the highest interest at €14.9 million.
