Betsson ordered to repay €500K to Swedish gambler

Sweden’s Supreme Court has ruled that Betsson must repay more than €500,000 to a Swedish player after finding that the company allowed the player to lose large sums between 2009 and 2014 through its Malta-based subsidiary BML Group.

Despite obvious signs of problem gambling, Betsson promoted the player to VIP status in 2012, further encouraging harmful behavior. In 2014, the gambler self-excluded and later filed a lawsuit, claiming the company exploited their addiction.

Betsson appealed, but the Supreme Court rejected the appeal. While the court removed a smaller compensation of €900 for emotional distress, it confirmed the most important part of the case: all bets made during the player’s VIP period were invalid. Because of this, Betsson must return the full €527,395 the player lost and also pay around €64,500 in legal costs.

Betsson AB president and CEO Pontus Lindwall commented:

“We are of course, disappointed with the Supreme Court’s decision in this individual case.  At the same time, we note that these are very specific circumstances and that the judgment is not expected to have any broader financial consequences for our operations. Betsson has for a long time implemented rigorous processes for responsible gaming. We do not allow customers with gambling problems known to us to use our services.”

This is not the first legal issue for the company in Sweden.  Recently, in June 2025, the Swedish Gambling Authority fined Betsson for AML failings.
