Denmark blocks 178 illegal iGaming websites

The Danish Gambling Authority (DGA) has blocked 178 illegal iGaming sites in the country’s largest enforcement to date, targeting unlicensed online operators.

The Frederiksberg court ruling, issued on June 26,  empowered DGA to block 178 websites that operated without a license. Among those blacklisted is BetUS, along with dozens of mirror sites, 76 of which replicate the Verde Casino brand.

This marks the biggest single court-approved action since site blocking began in 2012. The number of blocked websites now totals 616, demonstrating a clear shift in the regulatory model.

This move is a direct result of policy changes initiated by the regulator in 2023. Before that, DGA brought to court only one case per year. However, due to the increase in unlicensed operators, the Authority started pursuing website block cases biannually from 2024.

Anders Dorph, director of DGA, acknowledged the ongoing challenge of battling illegal gambling and noted that despite the persistent emergence of such sites, the authority is now better equipped to detect and act against them. According to Dorph, working up the blocking frequency helps ensure faster consumer protection and regulatory compliance.

The blocking process involves several steps. First, the DGA identifies a website offering gambling services without the required Danish licence. Then, the operator is allowed to stop operations voluntarily. If there is no compliance, the authority contacts telecom companies to block the website. These providers, in turn, require a legal ruling confirming the site’s illegality before implementing the DNS (Domain Name System) block.

A DNS block prevents users from accessing the illegal website by blocking the connection attempt and redirecting users to a warning page issued by the regulator.

Under the current Danish law, any entity that offers or promotes gambling services to users without a license is considered to be acting illegally.
