Interview with David Harris – Operations Lead at ReferOn

AffPapa recently interviewed the Operations Lead at ReferOn, David Harris, on affiliate trends, customization, migrations, and upcoming innovations.

Yeva: How do you personally keep up with trends in the affiliate marketing space, and how does the knowledge you gain work its way into the strategies you have developed for ReferOn?

In my position, I am constantly involved with affiliate data and affiliate queries. So keeping up to date with the latest queries is not that hard, what is interesting though is seeing trends over time or spikes in queries. For example, I may notice a similar setup and questions from various operators and it may all come from the same affiliate so I ensure the setup is unified across the board or perhaps I see more focus on particular regions over time or even particular ups and downs in traffic types.

Strategising these ebbs and flows in query topics is important for any product. With ReferOn, we look at impact and prioritise accordingly.

Yeva: ReferOn provides full customization for reports and metrics. How do you work with the clients for implementing the best suited for their specific business?

At ReferOn, we work closely with clients to deliver customized reporting and metrics solutions that align with their specific business needs. In 2024, we emphasized personalized assistance and frequent communication, helping clients fully utilize our platform’s capabilities. This approach contributed to significant growth in affiliate campaigns and operational success. Additionally, we’ve addressed challenges like platform migrations by streamlining processes to minimize downtime and ensure data integrity, as demonstrated in our successful migration for 2RBO Affiliates. In 2025, we’re rolling out enhanced data flexibility, cleaner reporting, and optimized payment processes to empower clients with real-time insights and efficient operations. Our commitment to client education through initiatives like ReferOn Insights seminars ensures continuous alignment with their goals, enabling them to make informed decisions, expand into new markets, and drive growth seamlessly.

Yeva: How does ReferOn assist clients in setting up and optimizing their affiliate environments during migrations?

The ReferOn team works closely with the client on guiding the best setups that mirror the old system making it easier for users to recall naming conventions and how to find certain structures for both admin users and affiliate users, as well as cleaning up legacy details or expanding more functions as they move to ReferOn. As data entries and rules can fluctuate over time, discussions need to occur on some aspects to ensure accurate data is going into ReferOn. Such examples include removing no longer active campaigns, campaign naming conventions or cleaning up deal structures.

Yeva: You know better than anyone that affiliates have very diverse needs. How do you bring about a balance of giving attention to preferences of really big businesses along with smaller, niche partners?

Our approach is built on flexibility, personalization, and proactive communication to ensure we address both ends of the spectrum effectively.

For large businesses, we provide advanced customization, scalable tools, and comprehensive data insights to meet their complex demands and drive substantial growth. Meanwhile, for smaller or niche affiliates, we focus on tailored support and user-friendly features that empower them to grow within their markets. Regular consultations, real-time data reporting, and scalable reward structures allow us to adapt to varying needs, ensuring all partners feel valued and supported, regardless of their size.

Yeva: Your product is essentially always in the process of enhancement. Any innovative features partners should look forward to?

In Q1 of 2025, we’re rolling out several exciting updates designed to enhance user experience and drive success.

Partners can look forward to live data flexibility for newer brands, enabling real-time insights that support agile decision-making. We’re also enhancing data reporting to provide cleaner, more actionable insights that empower operators to make profitable business decisions. Additionally, we’re refining payment processes with bulk updates, reporting, and invoicing for greater efficiency, and overhauling roles and privileges to give users more control and customization. These updates reflect our dedication to helping partners achieve their goals with the most innovative solutions available.

Yeva: ReferOn allows for company grouping. How does it benefit multi-brand users in maximizing efficiency and collaboration within the company portfolio, and how do you help operators make the most out of this feature?

ReferOn’s company grouping feature is a powerful tool for multi-brand users, enabling them to manage their portfolios more efficiently and foster collaboration across their brands. By consolidating operations within a single interface, users can streamline processes like reporting, payment management, and performance tracking, reducing duplication of effort and saving valuable time.

This feature promotes synergy between brands, allowing operators to compare performance metrics, share insights, and optimize strategies across their portfolio. To help operators maximize its benefits, we provide tailored onboarding, in-depth training, and ongoing support. Our team ensures users understand how to fully leverage company grouping to achieve seamless collaboration, operational efficiency, and enhanced decision-making across their brands.
