KSA reports successful introduction of sports sponsorship ban

The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) report shares that the ban on sports sponsorships has been successfully introduced “almost without an issue” in the Netherlands.

KSA added that “almost all public displays have disappeared” of the collaborations between sports teams and gambling operators.

The sports sponsorships ban from gambling companies was a part of the ban on untargeted gambling advertising of July 2023. It immediately restricted ads in public spaces and on buildings, but there was a transition period until July this year for sponsorship of sports teams to reflect the long-term nature of such deals.

The KSA noted a “few minor violations” in the first week after the ban took effect. The companies were sent a letter ordering them to end their association within the same week.

The ban on gambling advertising has been a fuel for debate about gambling regulation in the Netherlands. The Netherlands, as well as other countries across Europe, is in the spotlight for its efforts in tackling the unregulated market.

Last week, the KSA admitted that the recently introduced deposit limits may be powering up the illegal market activity, even if they reduce the average loss per player.

The government’s Ministry of Justice and Security’s rules stipulate that operators must contact players aged 18-24 who want to set a monthly deposit limit of more than €150, and contact must be made for players aged 25 and over who want a limit of €350 or more.
