New Jersey to completely ban sweepstakes casinos

New Jersey is set to completely ban sweepstakes casinos with the introduction of Assembly Bill 5447, introduced by Rep. Clinton Calabrese.
Sweepstakes casinos let users buy virtual currency and exchange it for cash prizes. This is not the first time that these casinos have been targeted by Calabrese. Earlier, he came up with a suggestion to regulate sweepstakes casinos, which, unlike traditional online casinos, operate under gaps in sweepstakes laws instead of gambling regulations. The bill also proposes stricter penalties for unlicensed gambling, with enforcement handled by the Division of Consumer Affairs and the Division of Gaming Enforcement.
New Jersey joins other states in a battle against sweepstake casinos
New Jersey isn’t alone in taking action. Other states have been working to regulate or ban sweepstakes casinos:
• Maryland is reviewing a bill to outlaw them.
• Mississippi has already voted to ban certain online gaming platforms.
• Washington has ruled that these platforms are illegal gambling.
• California is actively suing sweepstakes casino operators.
• Florida lawmakers are considering a bill to ban them.
Despite these efforts, sweepstakes casinos continue operating across the U.S. Many argue they follow federal sweepstakes laws, meaning they don’t need gambling licenses. Lawsuits and enforcement actions have been slow, allowing these platforms to persist.
The future of sweepstakes casinos remains uncertain.
