Reiner Moser appointed Chair of GGL board

Reiner Moser, a Baden-Württemberg official, will take over as chair of the board of directors at the GGL, Germany’s gambling regulator, on July 1.

Moser, who is now the head of the Ministry of the Interior’s digitization and local government department, will take over the GGL position from state secretary Udo Götze.

The fourth Interstate Treaty 2021 requires officials from each of the 16 federal states that make up the GGL board of directors to serve a one-year term as chair, alternating in alphabetical order.

Moser said:

“The regulation of online gambling is a demanding task, which focuses on the prevention of gambling addiction and the protection of players and young people.

There have been and will continue to be immense challenges to overcome. These include the implementation of court decisions on the use of the enforcement instrument IP blocking, but also developments in the area of supervision of legal providers.

I am confident that the GGL will tackle these challenges successfully. It can continue to be assured of the support of the states and the board of directors.”

Upon its founding on July 1, 2021, the gambling regulator was tasked with putting an end to unlicensed gambling and advertising across the federal republic. The GGL was given the authority to ban IP and payments in order to do this. The regulation of the legal gambling sector across the country was added to the GGL’s regulatory brief on January 1, 2023. The states of Germany shared responsibility for gambling regulation prior to this.
