Australia records the highest gambling losses
Australians lose more money on gambling than any other country such as New Zealand and the US.
A recent study from the Grattan Institute showed that Australia faces the highest gambling losses due to pokies (slot machines) and online betting.
The study highlights that pokies are more common in Australian suburbs than anything else. In one of Australia’s poorest areas, Sydney’s Fairfield, residents lose about AUD3,967 ($2,672) per year on pokies which is three times the state average. To minimize these numbers and help communities that are heavily affected by gambling, the study suggests a step-by-step reduction in the number of pokies across Australian states.
The CEO of the Grattan Institute, Aruna Sathanapally, commented:
“Australia has let the gambling industry run wild, and gamblers, their families, and the broader community are paying the price. Gambling products are designed to be addictive, and the consequences can be catastrophic: job loss, bankruptcy, relationship breakdown, family violence, even suicide. It is time our politicians stood up to the powerful gambling lobby and reined the industry in.”
Moreover, the report recommends several measures to address gambling-related issues, including banning all gambling ads that promote online and during sports events.
These ads are usually targeting men and are seen as a major driver of online betting. Another significant proposal is to introduce mandatory pre-commitment systems for online betting and pokies.
These systems would require individuals to set daily and yearly loss limits before gambling, acting like a “seatbelt” to prevent excessive losses, with suggested caps of AUD100 daily, AUD500 monthly, and AUD5,000 yearly.
In August 2024, Australia had several discussions to address gambling-related issues such as a total ban on gambling ads.
