Brazil to ban gambling for Bolsa Família recipients

Brazil is stepping up to protect its most vulnerable citizens by drafting new rules that would prevent people from receiving government aid from gambling.

The move targets recipients of Bolsa Família and the BPC (a pension for seniors and people with disabilities), ensuring these vital benefits aren’t lost to betting.

Regis Dudena, head of the country’s gambling regulatory body (SPA), confirmed the plan is nearly finalized. It follows a Supreme Court order calling for stronger protections to keep welfare funds out of the gambling ecosystem.

But the fix isn’t as simple as blocking welfare cards. Most beneficiaries receive their money in standard bank accounts, making it easy to place bets using other funds. So, instead of tracking every transaction, the SPA wants to block gambling access altogether for anyone registered as a welfare recipient regardless of how they fund their bets.

This approach aims to close the loopholes and make sure support money goes toward essentials, not online casinos.

Brazil keeps tightening the gambling market

On April 4, Brazil will start national betting system talks to discuss a national framework that could unify gambling regulations and promote a safer betting environment.
