Microsoft to shut down Skype: Marking the end of an era

According to XDA, a popular online community and website focused on technology, software, and hardware, Microsoft will shut down Skype in May 2025.
Skype, once a revolutionary platform for video calls, might be nearing its end. Microsoft, which acquired Skype in 2011, has announced that Skype will likely be discontinued in May.
Despite being used by 36 million people daily, the platform is no longer the go-to service for communication it once was. The latest Skype preview version hints at the shutdown, suggesting users replace Skype with Microsoft Teams.
Microsoft hasn’t confirmed the closure yet, but their recent actions, such as the sales halt of credits for Skype numbers, suggest Skype is no longer a priority.
Launched in 2003, Skype became one of the most popular video-calling platforms. After Microsoft’s acquisition, the platform was redesigned several times in order to compete with other messaging apps and integrate with products like Windows, Xbox, and even the now-discontinued Windows phones.
Moreover, Microsoft revamped Skype with features like Clips and AI integration, but the platform never regained its dominant position in the competition with Zoom and Teams. After two decades of shaping online communication, Skype might soon be part of digital history.
