Mobile sports betting hits $6.1B in NC after one year

After only a year of legalized mobile sports betting’s debut in North Carolina, the state reports wagers of more than $6.1 billion.
Having a taxation rate of 18%, the market generated more than 128 million as of February 2025.
Zack Hawkins, one of the key sponsors of the legislation, commented:
“It’s absolutely incredible. Mainly managed a lot of where the revenue went to help make sure that all the dollars that we knew were coming could go to help best support other areas across the state.”
By law, $2 million each year goes to the Department of Health and Human Services to support gambling addiction treatment and education. Since mobile betting debuted in March 2023, the state’s gambling hotline received 1300 calls in 2024, which is a significant increase when compared to 895 calls received in 2023.
The market also funds state universities and major events across North Carolina. Moreover, a contribution of $1 million annually goes to support North Carolina Amateur Sports, which funds youth sports programs. So far, more than $700,000 has been awarded to help schools and parks rebuild after Hurricane Helene.
Hawkins added:
“They had to completely rebuild everything after they left. To know that the revenue put in place, the revenue sharing that we put in place, was able to help, just lets you know that we’re doing the right thing.”
With such strong numbers in its first year, mobile sports betting is proving to be a serious financial boost for the state while also funding important community programs.
