Bet365 to pay back over $500k
Bet365 has been ordered by the state regulator in New Jersey, US, to pay more than $500,000 to bettors who placed 199 wagers after it was discovered that the operator was changing betting odds on sporting events without informing the state.
A review by New Jersey’s Division of Gaming Enforcement from April 2022 revealed that bet365 unilaterally changed the odds on several wagers and cited errors in 13 different sporting events. While bet365 did not consider these alterations contrary to their stipulated rules, they were forced to recognize that wagers should only be voided after prior approval.
The regulator said:
“The failure of bet365’s internal software, coupled with its manual trading errors, caused its system to be unable to ensure the accuracy of its data feeds. These failures are both problematic as to bet365’s business ability to conduct online gaming and the integrity and reliability of its operational systems and, therefore, unacceptable as they resulted in misleading wagering information that was relied upon by its patrons and ultimately led to incorrect payouts for numerous patrons.”
As a result of software errors and other mistakes made manually that affected accuracy in how data was sent through, bet365 has to return cash for $519,323.32 to its clients.
Problems were identified with bets that were placed on December 25, 2020, December 30, 2020 and November 18, 2022; some bets were not honored when they should have been.
The Division of Gaming Enforcement said:
“While bet365 had honoured seven winning wagers that had been placed by four patrons, it claimed that an eighth winning wager should not be honoured because the incorrect odds were egregious and should have been considered an obvious error.”
The DGE has ordered Bet365 to submit a report to fix errors in its systems, correct trading mistakes, and ensure data accuracy.
