Google and Apple face lawsuit over illegal gambling apps
Two of the most famous tech giants in the world, Google and Apple, have received a legal lawsuit in New Jersey for their involvement in distributing illegal casino apps.
Filed on November 27, the lawsuit claims that the companies violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organisations Act, simply known as the RICO Act. The aim of the act is to combat organized crime. According to Julian Bargo, the author of the lawsuit, having available casino apps simply blurs the parallel between gaming and gambling. Moreover, he lost more than $1,000 on those platforms.
Sweepstakes casinos
Sweepstakes casinos allow users to play games resembling traditional gambling activities like slots, blackjack, and roulette. Players can either enjoy the games in both free or non-free versions. To purchase the non-free version, players can use virtual currency to unlock additional features. While everything sounds good, these apps often operate without the appropriate licensing and regulation that are required from traditional casinos. Afterward, this gives the platform the opportunity to avoid gaming taxes only in 2023; many sweepstake casinos reported $4 billion in revenues.
Google and Apple remain popular for their entertainment value. However, lawsuits like this can raise questions and put their reputation under attack. With the legal highlight now on Google and Apple, the debate around the regulation of sweepstakes casinos is intensifying.
