Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) is considering blocking illegal iGaming websites in response to the growing threats by the industry.

Earlier, in February, Japan announced its struggles with rising online gambling addiction, hinting at the potential of the closure of illegal gambling websites. Moreover, in 2024, Japanese police identified more than 160 people involved in online gambling practices, which is a significant increase from the previous year.

At a recent House of Representatives Budget Committee meeting, the Chief of the Ministry’s Telecommunications Business Department said:

“We are preparing to set up a forum to consider the matter. We want to move everything forward so that we can start considering the measure as soon as possible.”

The discussion around illegal iGaming practices was intensified when 14 members of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), including players and staff, admitted to gambling in online casinos. While there was no evidence of betting on baseball games, the scandal raised concerns about the integrity of professional sports.

While Japan plans to open its first casino in Osaka in 2030, the government is focused on combating the current issue of illegal online gambling.
