Unibet faces new legal scandal in the Netherlands

Unibet, a major gambling operator based in Malta, is facing another legal scandal in the Netherlands for blocking lawsuits filed by its former players seeking to recover millions in losses.
These lawsuits are about Unibet’s operations before online gambling’s legalization in the Netherlands in October 2021. Many affected players report being unable to access their account details due to changes in Unibet’s operations. Benzi Loonstein, a lawyer representing thousands of these gamblers, claims that Unibet is deliberately delaying the legal process.
Benzi Loonstein said:
“Until 27 April 2024, the day the judge awarded the first damages, everything was fine. Then Unibet started to delay.”
Moreover, Loonstein has started legal proceedings to restore access to crucial transaction records, such as deposit and withdrawal details, which, according to Unibet, must be checked via banks and not via their data.
Loonstein commented:
“It is an excuse that distracts from their obligation to provide the data. A retailer you ask for a receipt from does not say, Just look at your bank statements.”
Earlier, in December 2024, KSA fined Unibet €400K over compliance breaches.
These cases once prove that Dutch lawmakers should introduce stronger protections for consumers, arguing that gambling operators must be held accountable for consumer rights.
