Dutch gambling ad ban shows no market impact

According to the Dutch regulator Kansspelautoriteit, an untargeted gambling advertising restriction has had no discernible impact on the market.

The KSA’s sixth monitoring report on online gambling found that the number of visits to gambling websites by non-gamblers had decreased significantly since the ban went into effect in July of the previous year.

According to the report, people who were gambling prior to the ban have not reduced their gambling frequency, implying that the restriction largely affects people who were not gambling earlier. Despite this, the monitoring report found that the gross gaming win in the Netherlands increased to €1.39 billion by the end of 2023, up from €1.08 billion in the year prior.

Although the market expanded rapidly in 2022, it has steadied in 2023, with a one percent rise in gross gaming revenue in the last six months compared to the first half of the year. The survey also indicated that individuals aged 18-23, a prominent group in the Netherlands’ market, constituted for 9.5 percent of the population but 22 percent of the overall 1.1 million player accounts, up from 970,000 in the year 2022.

The KSA also recorded a ninety percent channelization rate to the legal market in the most recent report, meaning that at least eight out of ten gamers are gambling with legal providers, which is consistent with the KSA’s goal. The channelization rate is affected by new players entering the market.
