China’s strong stand against cross-border gambling

China has reaffirmed its strong opposition to international gambling, highlighting the consistency and clarity of its stance.

This position was reiterated by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Lin Jian during a routine Beijing media conference. This declaration came after Chinese nationals were cautioned by the Chinese embassy in Singapore not to gamble when visiting the city-state, which has a regulated casino industry.

The embassy’s statement made clear that Chinese citizens may be breaking Chinese law by engaging in cross-border gambling operations, particularly if they organize them, even if a casino is operating lawfully outside of mainland China. There can be legal repercussions for individuals involved in this.

Lin Jian stressed that China forbids Chinese nationals from running international casinos, investing in foreign casinos with Chinese funds, and luring Chinese people to bet in foreign casinos. China is dedicated to working with relevant stakeholders to combat cross-border crimes, such as gambling, in order to uphold regional security and safeguard the welfare of the populace.

In 2021, the Chinese criminal code was modified to make it illegal for mainland Chinese nationals to arrange gambling trips abroad. Lin said that by working together to fight telecom fraud, internet gambling, and other cross-border crimes, China and other nations in the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation group have improved regional security.
