People in Japan can now wager on the results of high school baseball games, including the National High School Baseball Championship, using websites located overseas.

While this is prohibited in Japan, it is difficult to prosecute the owners of the foreign websites. Because it is a component of education, betting on high school athletics is troubling.

It was discovered that at least eleven gambling websites were available for placing bets on the high school baseball tournament. These websites, which claim to have licenses from locations like Curacao or the Isle of Man, accept bets in Japanese. Players fund their accounts on the websites and wager on both the final standings and individual games. In Japan, payouts are returned to the wagerers.

Social media posts seem to indicate that people are placing bets on teams according to their odds. The Japan High School Baseball Federation is upset that high school athletics are being taken advantage of and is aware of the betting.

With the exception of horse racing and a few other games, gambling is prohibited in Japan. The National Police Agency also views betting on Japanese online gaming sites as unlawful. Although betting is punishable by law in Japan, it is difficult to implement regulations against foreign businesses.

Experts advise Japan to control these illicit gambling websites in order to prevent any negative effects on high school sports.
